Why did I become a doula, you might wonder?
Why not? Doula work matches my natural bent to nurture and support people. As a mother to grown children, I've had to figure out the birth world and breastfeeding on my own. Doula work affords me the opportunity to engage with women on the verge of motherhood, and with those who are expanding their families as well. I get to bridge the gap I believe that exists, between how things were before the routine use of medical interventions. Deeply appreciative of my own birth stories, I encourage a woman to define her own. Incidentally, those same ones, my stories, were fueled by those told to me by great women that preceded me - my grandmothers and my mom. Pregnancy, labor, homebirths- even, and breastfeeding were all viewed as normal. This is a great platform to pass on wisdom and to learn from a new generation. It's incredible to witness the growth of a family, and the strength of a woman that matches the challenges posed to her during maternity and beyond. It is very fulfilling to share, advocate for the same birth choices I had, and be a part of improved birth choices for generations to come. |
